We are all responsible for conserving water usage. The water bill is the single largest bill regularly paid from our operating account (funded by our monthly assessments). And rates are going up!
Below are some tips that can be implemented to bring down our water usage and costs:
Perform a "Drip Inspection." Check for and repair dripping faucets and running toilets in your unit.
Replace toilet flush mechanism. New toilets use 1.6 gallons/flush. Older toilets can use 3 - 7 gallons/flush.
When hand-washing dishes, don't let water run to rinse. Fill one sink to wash, and the other to rinse.
Turn off the water while you shave, and save up to 300 gallons a month.
Run the clothes washer and dishwasher only when full, to save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
Use the garbage disposal sparingly.
Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
Collect the water used for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water plants.
When buying new washing machines and dishwashers, chose those offering cycle and load size options.
Shorten your shower by a minute or two and save up to 150 gallons per month.
Upgrade older toilets with water efficient models.
When running a bath, plug the tub before turning on water; adjust temperature as the tub fills.
Don't use running water to thaw food. Defrost food in the refrigerator for water efficiency and safety.
When doing laundry, match the water level to the size of the load.
A water-efficient showerhead is inexpensive, easy to install, and can save up to 750 gallons a month.
Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and save 25 gallons a month.
Washing dark clothes in cold water saves both water and energy, and helps clothes keep their colors.
Turn off the water while you wash your hair, to save up to 150 gallons a month.
Be alert for other ways to conserve water within your unit.
The Board will be researching and implementing other ways to conserve water in common areas.
